Buy A Chevy Cobalt SS Instead Of Any Other Car

The Chevrolet Cobalt SS Is Still A Chevrolet Cobalt

I will start with the bad news.  You might as well gut the interior of the Chevrolet Cobalt SS.  It’s terrible and unattractive. But did you expect something better?  Seriously, that’s the price you pay when you are hot rodding a compact car.

Now to the good news.  The Chevrolet Cobalt SS can handle better than most of the best sport cars in today’s market.  Don’t believe me?  Well when Car & Driver tested it in 2008 Lightening Lap (LL) it set a best in class recorded.  Making Subaru WRX STI and Lancer Evolution fanboys go home rethinking their purchase. Hell it smoked an S2000, Lotus Elise, BMW 335i, 2010 Mustang GT and a Lexus IS F in C&D’s LL 2008.  Believe me now? Plus it can blow the doors off of the Subaru BRZ, Fiesta ST, Focus ST in a zero to sixty sprint. Only taking  5.5 seconds hit 60 mph.

Dat wing tho…

You Want The Cobalt SS From 2008-2010

The Cobalt SS was built from 2005-2010.  But from 2008-2010 Chevrolet engineers gave the Cobalt SS an upgraded engine and chassis design.  Road and Track to said it was “the most underrated car in the world.”   Instead of a roots supercharger on the 2005-2007 models, a turbocharger was added in 2008.  That increased the horsepower by 55 more to 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.  The Cobalt SS could also dance, pulling 0.92 g’s on the skid pad.  Not bad for a front-wheel drive car that cost low $20k new.

A modern car like the Ford Focus ST has similar stats.  It too has a 2.0-liter turbo that makes 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Slower to sixty at 6.3 seconds but better on the skid pad pulling 0.93 g’s. But it was slower around VIR during C&Ds Lightning Lap testing compared to the Cobalt SS. The interior might be slightly better. But not by much. But it’s 2 to 3 times the price.

Oh Yea, And You Want The Cobalt SS Sedan

How great is it that you could choose between a coupe or a sedan?  The coupe was the Cobalt SS that most people opted for, but the sedan is the one you want.  Hate big wings? Choose the sedan.  Want to fit five people in your car? Choose the sedan.  Want to not look like a 17-year-old from eastern Pennsylvania?  Choose the sedan. Got it? Ok good.

Why do I love boring looking cars? It’s just so bad it’s amazing. The ultimate sleeper sedan.

It’s rare. Like really rare. Like rarer than some Ferrari’s. In 2009 Chevrolet only built 474 sedans.  Even less in 2010.  And in 2009 the Cobalt SS sedan placed third in Car & Driver’s compact car comparison.  Only losing to the VW GTI and MazdaSpeed3 – two of the best hot hatches of all time.  Car & Driver noted it’s strengths being “Everything associated with moving—engine, brakes, chassis—is superb.” It beat out a Subaru WRX, Honda Civic Si and a Mini Cooper S JCW – all highly regarded cars.

The interior isn’t that bad, is it?

Buy it now. Prices are on the rise for the sedan Cobalt SS.  So if you are looking at buying a new Ford Focus ST, Golf GTI, Subaru WRX you might be able to get a car better then those for half the price!  Sorry Justin.
