Encountering a Peraves Monotracer

Peraves Monotracer

Josh and Will were at Cars and Coffee in Great Falls, VA on April 11th, 2015 when they spotted the most interesting sight all morning. Not sure of what it was, they needed a closer look. It was a rolling cabin on two wheels. What they found was a Peraves Monotracer, a BMW 1200cc motorcycle with a full cabin and seating for two.

The owner, Jim, had ridden drove up from central Virginia to check out the weekly Cars & Coffee event. Josh jokingly asks what year he was from and with a chuckle Jim replies, “1999, actually”. Northern Virginia is home to several of the wealthiest counties in the country and this is our first time seeing a Pervades Monotracer in their nearly two decade existence in the United States. Goes to show how rare the Monotracer actually is. Pretty cool.

More about the Peraves Monotracer:

The Pervades Monotracer is powered by a 1.2-liter 4cylinder BMW-K-engine with an output of 130Hp. Weighing in at about 485Kg (1.070 pounds) it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5,7 sec and features a top speed of 250 km/h (155mph). Not bad at all for a motorcycle that not only protects you from the forces of nature but also allows you to carry on a few back packs in its trunk –yes it has a 200-liter trunk in the rear. What’s bad is its (basic) price, about $80,000 USD. The first Monotracers were brought to the United States in 1996.

  1. Found this old post and thought I’d correct a couple things. The Peraves MonoTracer was the successor to the Peraves Ecomobile. Approximately 90 Ecos were built(starting in Winterthur, Switzerland but later moving to Brno, Czech Republic) from 1982 until a fire destroyed the molds in 2005. I know at least two were imported into the US.

The MonoTracer was launched in 2007 I believe and a handful were imported into the US in 2008 and 2009. The company founder retired and his business partner could not keep the company afloat in difficult economic times and the company went into receivership. The founder came out of retirement and along with the actual builder of the bikes(in the Czech Republic) have started building them again as the Peraves Monoracer(no “T”). The gas version has been discontinued and only the electric version is now built.

The white one you saw owned by Jim Lorimer is now for sale: http://21stcenturymotoring.com/
