2016 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T: An Almost Perfect Compact Crossover?

The last time I reviewed Hyundai’s 2016 Tucson, I was rather impressed by the solidity of its chassis and refined road manners. So much so in fact, that I had said that Hyundai had finally beat the Germans in their own game as far as chassis development goes.

But I had a major gripe with the Tucson: it lacked the oomph to go with its chassis. Back then, I had qualified the base 2.0L four-cylinder as seriously under powered, making the Tucson feel like an appliance on wheels.

That said, Hyundai Canada has responded to my complaints by throwing me the keys to a Tucson 1.6T, which, ironically, is the bigger engine choice in this compact crossover’s lineup. And the first thing I can say is that added turbo power is precisely what the little Tucson needed to go from very good, to almost perfect.
