Preparation for the annual journey to Petit Le Mans 2011

Photo by James BooneThe American Le Mans Series is a series of fast paced and strenuous races. Each races actually contains multiple classes battling amongst themselves all in one place and all at the same time. The technology driven LMP1 cars must weave their way between the slower classes of LMP2, LMPC, GT and GTC. The slower class cars will not only be right foot down to keep pace but must also check their rear view for the faster class cars to let them through. As you can imagine, incidents do occur and tempers do flare. Petit Le Mans is not only a grueling 10 hour battle on the tarmac of Road Atlanta but it is also the final race of the American Le Mans Series making this the venue where dreams of championships are clinched or shattered.

It was four years ago that RFD first ventured south to Georgia to experience Petit Le Mans first hand and we’ve been in attendance ever since. 2011 will be no different. Our journey begins Thursday morning as we leave the DC area for yet another memorable venture to the American Le Mans finale in Braselton, Georgia.

To get you up to speed let’s talk championships and break down the 2011 standings with a quick reality check, shall we? I could care less about chassis, engine or tire championships. Same boat? Good. Here we go.

LMP1 Team Championship
Dyson Racing sitting 32 points ahead of Muscle Milk who has nearly double the amount of points as third place, Oryx Dyson. That’s clinched.

LMP2 Team Championship
Yawn!

LMPC
Genoa Racing and Core Autosport are in a heated battle separated by 2 points at 146 to 144 respectively. Intersport Racing is sitting comfortably in third place.

GT Championship
BMW is up on Corvette Racing 154 to 116 so first and second are locked in. Third place for GT Class is where the excitement is. Flying Lizard Motorsports have 85 points, a bit out of reach to take second place from Corvette Racing. In their rear view is Risi Competizione with 83 points and trailing in fifth is Team Falken Tire with 77 points. The battle for the final podium spot in GT class is up for grabs. LETS GO TEAM FALKEN. No bias here.

GTC
Separated by just 7 points, Black Swan Racing and TRG are duking it out for the championship. Alex Job racing has bronze is in the bag.
