Champ Car files for bankruptcy

That’s right, folks. After rumors of an IRL/CCWS merger, Champ Car World Series is no more.

After being formed in 2003 after the ending of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), Champ Car was made as the premier American open wheel racing series to go against the Indy Racing League (IRL). CART created some serious driving talent like Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve. Champ Car had Sebastien Bourdais.

The Long Beach race will be the finale race of the CCWS. IRL will work toward racing at Long Beach in 2009. I guess America loves its oval racing, whether open or closed wheel, much more than road course racing. Maybe because so many of the CCWS races were outside the US? Who knows. It shall be interesting to see where the drivers of Champ Car end up…
