Nurburgring Lap Times – How Far We’ve Come

July 7th, 2010 Josh Taylor No comments

Recently while browsing the fastest lap times around the Nurgburgring Nordschleife I noticed how the 8 minute mark was a barrier which wasn’t overcome by a street car until nearly the year 2000. It was then that driver Walter Rohl lapped the 1999 Porsche 996 GT3 around the Green Hell to a time of 7′56″. It wasn’t until a few years later that Dave Hill matched the GT3’s time in a Corvette Z06, which was a reasonably obtainable ride.

Up until the Porsche 996 GT3, the Jaguar XJ220 and the Bugatti EB 110 were kings of the Nurburgring. When I think cars of the 90’s I think of the Jaguar XJ220, the Lamborghini Diablo, the Dodge Viper – cars which were on the cover of every school boy’s homework folder and appeared in the first Need For Speed video game. The incredibly sexy 217 MPH Jaguar XJ220 lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 1992 and still holds one of the top 50 fastest times of 7′46″. Most should recall the 600hp Bugatti EB 110 which fell short of the 8 minute barrier by just 1 second. The legendary Lamborghini Diablo also missed the mark, setting a lap time of 8′04″. The American powerhouse Dodge Viper GTS coupe only managed an 8′10″.

In the past ten years alone there have been over 65 production vehicles to set a 7′XX” lap time around the Green Hell. How far we’ve come.

Porsche GT2 RS laps the Nurburgring in 7:18

July 6th, 2010 Josh Taylor No comments

Porsche claims the 620hp twin-turbo 3.6L 2011 GT2 RS will go full circle of the Nurburgring in 7:18. It achieves this mark by scrapping 154 lbs over the previous GT2 thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber and lighter wheels. The tires (245/35/19 front, 325/30/19 rear) were specifically developed for this 911 GT2 RS and fit under flared wheel arches. Expect to see the cars arrive in the US around October 2010 carrying an MSRP of $245k.

Joao Barbosa takes the Action Express Racing Porsche to victory in the 2010 Rolex 24. The Daytona Prototype is powered by a Cayenne-based V8 engine which was built in Germany and then highly modified in America by Lozano Brothers. It’s Barbosa’s second consecutive Rolex 24 win.
